UK Student Visa Guide for Omani Students
Welcome! This guide provides detailed steps and advice specifically for students from Oman applying for a UK Student Visa. The process can seem complex, but preparing carefully will make it much smoother.
Phase 1: Before You Apply - The Essentials
Before you can start your online application, you must have several key documents and details in order. Getting these right is the most important part of the process.
1. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
This is the most critical document. A CAS is a unique reference number issued by your UK university after you have accepted an unconditional offer. It confirms to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that you are a genuine student. You cannot apply for your visa without it.
2. Financial Requirements
You must prove that you have enough money to pay for your course fees and your living costs. This is a common reason for visa refusal, so pay close attention.
- Course Fees: You need to show you have money for your first year of course fees (or the entire course if it's less than a year long). The amount will be stated on your CAS.
- Living Costs: You need to show you have £1,023 per month for up to a maximum of 9 months. This means you must show you have **£9,207** for your living costs if your course is in the UK but outside of London.
(Note: As of late 2025, £9,207 is approximately **4,500 OMR**, but always check the latest exchange rates).
3. English Language Proficiency
You will have already proven this to your university to get your offer. Your CAS will state how your university assessed your English language ability. You typically do not need to provide a separate certificate with your visa application unless specified.
4. Tuberculosis (TB) Test
Good news! Students applying from Oman are **not** currently required to take a TB test. Always check the official list for any changes before applying.
Phase 2: The Application Process Step-by-Step
Once you have your CAS and your finances are in order, you can begin the formal application.
- Complete the Online Application Form: The only place to apply is on the official UK Government website. The form is detailed, so take your time and ensure all information matches your documents exactly.
- Official Link: gov.uk/student-visa/apply
- Pay the Fees Online: You will need to pay two mandatory fees during the online application.
- Visa Application Fee: The standard fee is currently **£490**. (Approx. 240 OMR).
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): This gives you access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS). It is currently **£776 per year** of your visa. You must pay this for the entire duration of your visa upfront.
- Book Your Appointment in Oman: After paying, you will be directed to the website of VFS Global, the official commercial partner for UKVI in Oman. You will book your appointment at their Visa Application Centre in Muscat to provide your biometrics.
- VFS Global Oman: vfsglobal.com/omn/en/gbr
- Attend Your Appointment: Go to the VFS Global centre in Muscat on your scheduled date. You will submit your documents (or have them scanned if you used the self-upload service) and provide your biometrics (fingerprints and a digital photograph).
Phase 3: After Your Appointment
Waiting for a Decision
Standard processing times are around 3 weeks, but this can vary. You can track your application's progress via the VFS Global website. You will be notified when your passport is ready for collection.
Receiving Your Visa
If your application is successful, you will receive your passport back with a sticker (a "vignette") inside. This vignette is a temporary visa, usually valid for 90 days, which allows you to enter the UK.
Phase 4: Arriving in the UK
Collecting Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
Your vignette is not your full visa. Within 10 days of arriving in the UK, you must collect your **Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)**. This card is your official visa for the duration of your stay. You will have chosen the collection point (usually your university or a local Post Office) during your application.
Police Registration
Omani nationals are **not** currently required to register with the police after arriving in the UK.
Crucial Tips for a Smooth Application
- Start Early: Begin preparing your financial documents at least 2-3 months before you plan to apply. You should apply for your visa as soon as you receive your CAS.
- Check Every Detail: A small mistake on the form or a document that doesn't meet the requirements can lead to refusal. Double-check everything.
- Keep Copies: Keep digital and physical copies of every single document you submit.
- Be Honest: Always provide truthful information. UKVI has extensive checks in place.
- Don't Book Flights: Do not book any non-refundable flights to the UK until you have received your visa.
